Whether you are a CEO, a manager, a business owner, a parent or a friend we all have opportunities to lead. Heck, if nothing else we need to be leading “ourselves” to greater heights, right? All great companies, organizations, teams and families have great leadership, inspirational leadership that drives them to those lofty heights. Are you one of those inspirational leaders?
You might say, “No, I’m not charismatic or inspirational. I’m not a great leader.” What if great leadership is more within reach than you think? I’ve found there is a simple formula to great leadership. I’ve researched it. I’ve worked for great leaders. I have developed myself into an inspirational leader.
Listen to what Simon Sinek writes about great leaders like MLK, Kennedy, Reagan, Steve Jobs and others in his book, “Start With Why.”
“No matter from where they hail, they all have something in common. All the inspiring leaders and companies, regardless of size or industry, think, act and communicate exactly alike…What if we could all learn to think, act and communicate like those who inspire?” He goes on to explain that the goal of his book is to “offer you the cause of action.” What it is that gets people inspired, moving and yes even leading others into action. He concludes the intro to his book with this:
“From now on, start with Why.”
If you want to become a great, inspirational leader it’s as simple as starting with Why, a Big Why.
Here’s step one of five on using this simple principle to become an inspirational leader. Step one, Get Inspired Yourself by Getting A Clear, Compelling Big Why.
None of us can lead people where we haven’t gone ourselves. We can’t be inspiring if we aren’t inspired. It’s as simple as that. In order to motivate others to get out of bed early in the morning, to give their gifts to the world, to make the world a better place – we have to be that motivated and inspired ourselves.
Start here and it’s no longer work. It’s no longer just a job. It’s no longer boring and uninspired work. It’s my place to be a difference maker in the world. My life has purpose and meaning.
The great evangelist, Billy Sunday said the secret to his inspiring preaching was this, “Set yourself on fire and the world will come to watch you burn!” Are you on fire yet?
What’s your “BIG WHY?”
